The NHL and ESPN....?

Q: Lately I have noticed ESPN has been covering hockey alot more. I know it's playoff time and all but in the past few post-lockout years I don't remember ESPN covering the playoffs this much. On top of that I have heard from a couple of places that the NHL could strike a deal with ESPN. After seeing the BU-Miami game and hearing Gary Thorne call that Overtime goal, I wouldn't mind seeing hockey back on ESPN. Anybody have any input or news on this?

I don't know, they still don't cover it that much. Not as much as NBA or MLB. It would be good for the league to strike a deal with ESPN. More viewers.
  • JonB says:
the one thing i hate about the States is ESPN i watch sportscenter there for a whole damn hour before they mention anything about hockey.
  • McGregor Duchene to the Avs says:
I don't know, I like the Versus coverage and I'd hate to see it go.
  • go ducks! says:
I hope so, versus sucks. Good to hear thorne is still calling games. Btw, whoever said sportscenter sucks, the TSN version talks about hockey 90% of the time lol.
  • Tuna Spearer (she said yum yum?) says:
    Hi

Last I heard the NHL and Versus where extending their contract I believe. I know that rumor had it ESPN wanted the rights to some playoff games in the future, though I don't know if that will be worked out. The NHL will not be leaving Versus as their full time carrier anytime soon, ratings are higher then ESPN ever saw. The NHL loves Versus and Versus loves the NHL.

    Thank You

I think you will eventually see hockey return to ESPN, maybe not in the next year or two but definately within the next five or so years. right before the lockout and then of course after, the league was struggling to stay above in popularity. however, with the emergence of young, flashy stars like crosby, malkin, and ovechkin, the nhl is slowly 'making a comeback.' another factor that might help its popularity is the olympics next winter in vancouver, especially considering that the americans will field a terrific young team that could seriously make a run at a medal. considering all of these things that are pointing hockey in the right direciton among americans, i think you will soon see ESPN make a bid to get the likes of bucci, melrose, thorne among others back in the booth for NHL games
  • giiufh says:
ESPN sucks. Sometimes they don't even have the NHL on the sports ticker. I'd like to see VS keep it.
  • short and to the point says:
espn dropped hockey as it was a money loser and they have intention in bidding for it in the near future.
  • Leafsfan29 is on the 1st tee says:
Thank God I live in Canada...ESPN's coverage was dire.

ESPN is already on record as saying "thanks but no thanks" to the NHL. NBC's deal is through 2011, and Versus' deal is through 2010. Versus is already getting better ratings on their network than ESPN was getting prior to the lockout.

Covering hockey a lot more? You mean they actually show a highlight once or twice once they've spent 20 minutes analyzing some slam dunk like it's the Zapruder film?

I know people like to knock Versus for their lack of coverage, but at least they've gone to a predictable regular season slate of games (as opposed to the "hey, guess when we have games on" approach that ESPN went with), and from everything I've read, they're doing playoff doubleheaders (which ESPN never did), including using, in some cases, TSN and CBC feeds (smart on their part).

When I've been in the US of late, ESPN is a great advert for hockey fans to get the NHL Network.

What did you miss the most during the off-season?

Q: 1.) watching web gems on ESPN and hoping a player from my team made it on the list.
2.) Watching the day games with a bowl of snacks.
3.) Looking foward to reading NY Post and Daily News
4.) Seeing Jose Reyes smile
5.) just watching baseball!

A: Just watching baseball.

ESPN Soccernet Preview: Liverpool v Manchester City Barclays Premier League ESPN

It is Rafa Benitez who needs the mastery more. Liverpool are on a wretched run of one win and six defeats in their last nine games in all competitions and he has now felt the need to phase his preference for the Premier League over the Champions League in an interview, following accusations his chief matter is enhancing his reputation in Europe. Regardless, this is an important match against top-four rivals and Benitez is still contending with an damage-ravaged squad. While Steven Gerrard is set to start, Fernando Torres is battling to be fit, Alberto Aquilani is still not utterly ready and Yossi Benayoun and Albert Riera are definitely out.

Mark Hughes has also verbal to the press this week to insist that the club has made progress and to deny suggestions the owners have demanded a top-four end this season. Their run of five successive draws in the league, in games with Aston Villa, Wigan, Fulham, Birmingham and Burnley, has been hugely discouraging after four straight league wins at the start of the campaign. Hughes' job appears cosy for now, but a defeat at Anfield would be a sign that this is to be another transitional season and may test the owners' restraint given the level of their investment.

Liverpool player in focus: Steven Gerrard. How they have struggled without him. Fernando Torres and the improved Yossi Benayoun have done their largest to plug the gap, but his return as a substitute against Birmingham provided a strong reminder of the way he changes the rig dynamic. So often the driving force behind Liverpool's comebacks, he has the ability and mental pneuma to change the face of a game and, having revealed that he is on the way towards full fitness, City have quantity to fear.

Manchester City player in focus: Craig Bellamy. A incredulity signing in January, Bellamy still generates headlines for the wrong reasons, but his manner earlier this season showed why big clubs continue to invest in his services. Having scored for Metropolis in this fixture last season, heavily denting Liverpool's title chances in a 1-1 dead heat, he will again be looking to hurt his former employers.

Key battle: Steven Gerrard v Nigel de Jong. De Jong was sinistral out of a more attacking lineup against Burnley for Stephen Ireland, but Mark Hughes will purposes use the Netherlands defensive midfielder to marshal Gerrard at Anfield. Gerrard's talent to influence the game, particularly in the absence of Yossi Benayoun, is likely to be crucial to the home side if they are to break down the visitors.

Tactics: Fernando Torres has returned to training, and Liverpool could well start him up front with Steven Gerrard in behind. Rafa Benitez is set to the countryside with the more defensively-minded Javier Mascherano and Lucas as Alberto Aquilani regains his suitableness. Manchester City, meanwhile, appear to have officially adopted the 4-4-2 formation, although the personnel make tracks it slightly more complex. Shaun Wright-Phillips is first-choice on the right, while Craig Bellamy is against as the left midfielder, with Carlos Tevez busily chasing down balls in the scrape and Emmanuel Adebayor as something approaching a lone frontman. Stephen Ireland played alongside Gareth Barry against Burnley, but his collapse to track goal-scorer Kevin McDonald is likely to ensure that an out and out defensive midfielder, most liable Nigel de Jong, shores up the midfield.
