Worry is a form of control. Its about time you learnt that and understood the reasons why the government want people scared and divided.
  • John says:
Keep letting the Muslims in, and it is barely a matter of time before they succeed in blowing up, or poisoning, many (hundreds, or thousands) of us. Just a simple matter of fix. Thanks to the Labour Party.....daft bunch of loonies.
  • Morocco Joe says:
Bit of hype and mellodrama timed to attract the public away from the disgusting shame of police at the G20 demos.
  • Allan M says:
The biggest intimidation is muslims breeding like rats

SFA chief Gordon Smith defends giving Burley another chance Scottish Daily Record

SFA chief Gordon Smith defends giving Burley another unintentionally

Gordon Smith was the man with his finger on the Burley button. He could have, and should have, pressed it a lot sooner than he did.

But yesterday the SFA chief CEO insisted he had to give his man one last chance to prove beyond all reasonable doubt he simply wasn't skilled of turning Scotland's slump around.

The final, irrefutable proof came during a 45-note calamity in Cardiff on Saturday as Smith winced his way through a humiliating capitulation to what was to all intents and purposes the Welsh under- 21s.

It was then and only then that Smith once gave up hope the man he chose to lead the nation might somehow unmask himself as some sort of Sir Alex Ferguson in semblance.

Some might say because of his credentials as the first "football man" to head up our blazerati Smith should have been the very first to realise Burley's constant bungling had dragged his band into a terminal decline.

But yesterday Smith insisted quite the opposite. It was, in occurrence, because of his experience in the game he felt the beleaguered boss deserved one last chance. On Monday, Smith for all time bit the bullet when he drove to a hotel on the side of the M8, thanked Burley for his efforts then returned to Hampden to off the hunt for the latest King of Scotland.

Since then he has been pilloried for flip-flopping on the biggest arbitration of his time in the corridors of power - sacking a manager less than two months after backing him. But Smith unhesitatingly believes he did the right thing.

"It wasn't difficult at all," he insisted when asked how it felt to haul someone over the coals Burley face to face, thanks but no thanks.

Decision

"I just felt it needed to be done. We had to assertive a decision. I sat down with George and said to him where we were with it. I told him the SFA had come to a decision and I'm afraid your possession is over.

"Some people say he was unlucky in some ways. Some people say he made bad decisions. I think we gave him a moderate amount of time.

"As a 'football man' I thought we should see how it developed. We did get within a game of the qualifiers for the World Cup remember. Because of my football experience I can see how things might go.

"If people hadn't stuck by Alex Ferguson in the premature days at Manchester United where would he be now? That's the way football is."

It's certainly an interesting take on a catastrophic episode in Scottish football's news. Burley, as the records will show, has the worst record of any Scotland manager since football began.

It by no means required a genius to identify the wrong man was in position but, having placed him there, it is more liable to Smith felt somehow obliged to exhaust the last morsels of public support before hit at the axe. And that is understandable.

Smith himself, after all, is still learning on the job or at least he certainly was when he chose Burley over the likes of Graeme Souness. This is a goof he is unlikely to repeat. If he does then he is even less likely to survive.
