"Mom, what do you fall short of for Mother's Day?"

My now-16-year-old was just a tyke of 8 or 9 when he asked me this question, and then totally discounted my conform to.

(Was he already in training to someday become a husband?)

"Make me a card, or sing a song for me, " I replied.

"Naw, I stand in want to do something good."

"But I'd love to hear you sing, " I countered.

He harrumphed, as if put out because I was patronizing him, turned and walked away.

It turned out to be a Characteristic year.

I never have figured out how, at such a tender age, he'd been conditioned to believe that store-bought cards were better than handmade, or that a long story didn't count as a real gift. At least it was just a phase; he got over it.

If you're starting to fear that this is turning into a schlocky Watch over's Day column, relax. That's as rose-colored as I'm going to get.

But what I am going to do is give a few suggestions for all you procrastinators on what to do this weekend for your own moms.

Here are a few bucks-saving tips for people considering buying an Apple iPad, especially now that versions with 3G wireless help are available.

The tips are based on about a month of experimenting with the gadget. It really does feel like the start of a new obliging of personal computing — an early start that hints at how great tablet browsers will be after the kinks are worked out, there's more meet in the market and prices come down.

Within a few years, most homes probably will have some kind of Web tablet for browsing, reading, displaying photos and playing music and videos — basically all the nonwork things people do with laptops today.

But what's absolutely going to make these devices take off is the rise of personal clouds. I'm talking about online repositories and Web services with incessant capacity, where people store and manage digital files and access them from all sorts of devices.

You're very likely using some form of personal clouds already, including Web e-mail, Facebook or photo storage sites. You might also be streaming video from Netflix or music from Rhapsody; they become individualized as you build playlists, preferences and queues.

Auditions for Norma Russell’s newest melodious comedy, “Circus Shambles,” will be at 2 p.m. at the Warehouse Living Arts Center, 119 W. Sixth Ave., with 12 featured roles handy for six men and six women (late teens and adults), and numerous chorus members (any age over 12 years old as extended as you can sing). Those auditioning should be prepared to sing 16 bars of an upbeat song and dress to move. There will also be dismal readings from the script. Rehearsals will begin on June 1. Performance dates will be July 22-25, 27, 29-31. “Circus Chaos” tells the story of a small struggling circus that is in danger of having to “pleat its tent.” The bearded lady’s hair is falling out, the fat lady is losing load, the lion tamer’s lion is in hock for an unpaid feed bill, and the circus ringmaster/proprietress is resistant to change that could possibly be their salvation. At that point a Texas lady with a psychic toe shows up and the flexibility’s afoot.
