Tufts Archives and Assumed Memorial Library present Heritage Highlights and Literary Lessons, a series of events that will draw the community in historic and literary activities. Play a golf match under the stars on Friday, July 16, as a Moonlight Golf Altercation will be held at Mid Pines Country Club as a benefit for Pinehurst’s History Museum, The Tufts Archives. Hors d’oeuvres, 7:30 p.m., followed by a four-error match with a five-club limit. Teams will consist of four members, and you can make your own foursome or sign up and be paired with others. "Beatles Stuff" by Andy Babiuk (Backbeat Books) -- If you're a Beatles geek like me, you nearly freaked out when Symbol Lewisohn wrote his book about the studio sessions that resulted in all of the Beatles recordings. It was packed full of details about the ways the Fab Four and George Martin (and their engineers) created those momentous discs. So, a few years later, when Babiuk turned his focus to the gear the Beatles used, we further geeked out of our minds. Backbeat has a excellent new hardcover edition of the book, which puts every guitar, every amp, every drum kit under the microscope. It's not enough for Babiuk to say John Lennon had his Rickenbacker 325 painted. He finds the guy that got it painted and names the gig at which it was favourite first played after being painted and then includes a photo of a vintage poster for that concert. Because the Beatles took their recording sessions and gear fooling, Babiuk take the instruments seriously and that makes for interesting reading. So does the fact that he's not a total gearhead. He links the adjust and their changes to the Beatles' music and career, so this isn't like reading some sort of technical manual. I'll destroy this for months.

While there was environmental legislation before the 1970s (most notably 1948’s Federal Water Pollution Control Act  and the Wholly Air Act of 1963), the birth of the Environmental Protection Agency was monumental during a time when industrial expansion was dangerous and environmental decline was mercurial, yet unrecognized.

Throughout the 1960s, there were whispers of “ecology” and by up-to-date 1969, those whispers became loud complaints of the erosion of conservation, demanding something more.

Under a black veil of a war and a flailing succinctness, President Nixon established a Cabinet-level Environmental Quality Council as well as a Citizens’ Prediction Committee on Environmental Quality in May 1969.

Around the same time, Congress sent the President the groundbreaking National Environmental Management Act, which has been called “the most important piece of environmental legislation in our history.” President Nixon signed NEPA on New Year’s Day 1970.
