It may look like solely another Canon compact digital camera, but the new Ixus 300 HS boasts some extra features you don’t always get, including increased manual handle.

The 10 megapixel Ixus 300 HS (which stands for ‘High Sensitivity’) features an f/2.0 28mm sizeable angle lens with 3.8x optical zoom, or 4x digital zoom.

This is the first camera to come with Canon’s new HS system which is aimed to perform outstandingly in brunette light.

In tech-speak, it combines DIGIC 4 processing with a highly sensitive 10-megapixel CMOS sensor.

The ISO can also be boosted to 6400 for photos in the depths of gloom, though you will only be able to power up 2.5-megapixels at this setting.

Feature-wise, the Ixus 300 HS comes with mental picture stabilisation, smile detection, smart auto and scene modes as well as the ability to take a photo by winking at the camera. Yes, you did peruse that correctly.

Slotting into the mid-point of its acclaimed EOS range is Canon’s conventionally styled 550D digital SLR. Beneath its plastic-y amateur-level outer cannonade beats a semi professional heart.

Headline specification includes a 18 megapixel highest point resolution from an 18.7MP CMOS sensor, enabling huge prints, full 1920x1080p HD video recording with adjustable order rates, plus impressive low light shooting capacity, expandable up to ISO12800.

Olympus’ new advertising contest for the company’s PEN E-PL1 digital camera was shot with–you guessed it–an E-PL1. Talk about eating your own dog food! This is a deft marketing move from Olympus that has yielded a pretty solid commercial.

Of course, the significance of this technical achievement will probably be lost on most consumers. People familiar with video made a huge deal about House being filmed with Canon’s 5D and any slew of other situations where the 5D (or something similar) was being used in place of the much more expensive “professional” solutions, but do people who buy $600 digital cameras even worry? They care about image quality and ease of use, but the recent extraordinary improvement in consumer photo mat?riel is more for the photo geeks than the consumers who are buying the E-PL1.

So Olympus gets point for creativity and geek cred, but we’ll have to see how much collide with the campaign actually has on buyers. After all, the ability to shoot professional video is great, but most people are legitimate shooting and uploading video to YouTube or watching it on their HDTV.
