Janice Chen has been covering technology for almost two decades. Serving as collector in chief at CNET and Computer Shopper magazine for many years, she oversaw product coverage for the CNET and ZDNet websites. She appeared weekly on CNN Headline Statement' Hotwired segment for several years, recommending personal tech ranging from digital cameras to notebook PCs, and prior to that, she appeared with Anderson Cooper on a monthly segment for ABC Wonderful News This Morning. She has been a frequent guest on CNN, BBC, and CBS, and has been interviewed by Matt Lauer for NBC's Today Show. Janice got her hands on a Nikon Coolpix 900 back in 1998 and has been a digital camera supporter ever since. A graduate of Cornell University, she resides in Maplewood, NJ, with her husband (a professional photographer who shot his last savour of film in 2003) and their two daughters.

The 12- megapixel camera powered up rakish in just over a second. Its default setting is in the Auto Picture mode that recognises common subjects and switches settings automatically to get the to the fullest extent results. There are 23 other scene modes to choose from, or the user can press a button on the back that gives access to an nonchalantly mode, with larger menu text and removing any options that could directly affect image status.

There’s no viewfinder so shots are composed on the 2.7in screen, which has an elongated widescreen format. This was obedient when recording video clips, as the image fills the screen without cropping. Although the camera records in the elevated-definition resolution of 720p , sound is only in mono and there’s no HDMI output for direct tie to a flat-panel TV.

When taking still photos the wider screen means a thick black band appears down one side – not that this is a big befuddlement. It’s quick, too: pictures at the highest quality settings were saved to the memory card in two seconds. Though it has a built-in instant, low-light shooting is possible without the flash, thanks to impressive light sensitivity settings.
